Hobart Harbour

Hobart is Tasmania’s harbor capital, located in the south-east of the state at the foot of majestic Mount Wellington. Hobart was founded in 1804 as a penal colony. Hobart is Australia's second oldest capital city after Sydney. In 2009, the city has population of approximately 212,019. A resident of Hobart is known as a "Hobartian". The city is located in the state's south-east on the estuary of the Derwent River. The skyline is dominated by Mount Wellington at 1,271 meters (4,170 ft.) high. Hobart Australia’s smallest and most historic capital in close proximity to beautiful natural surrounds it is also your start point to explore south east Tasmania and is a provocative mix of historic and contemporary art and culture.

The Art Mob found in Hobart’s Hunter Street arts precinct, is Tasmania's only dedicated Aboriginal art gallery. Hunter Street is located on the waterfront, a five-minute walk from the city. Another is The Colville Street Art Gallery features contemporary work by artists from Tasmania and mainland Australia. Another is the Lady Franklin Gallery, situated in Tasmania's capital Hobart, and was built in 1842. This gallery in the Hobart suburb of Lenah Valley was built by Lady Jane Franklin, wife of Sir John Franklin, who was governor of Tasmania at the time. And the Tasmanian Landscapes Gallery is located in the central business district of Hobart, southern Tasmania. This Gallery is an ongoing and evolving showcase of Luke’s vision and passion for the Tasmanian Landscape which is world renown as a place of unique natural beauty.

For recreational places the Golf Park Hobart is good for everyone, the golf driving range situated opposite the Hobart airport in Cambridge. It is ten minutes from Hobart city and walking distance from Hobart International Airport. The range features 22 undercover bays, a 300 meter range, club hire and tuition from PGA teaching professional. Another is the New Town Bay Golf Club is a nine-hole metropolitan golf course north of Hobart. The Club is located in the riverside suburb of Lutana.

One attraction at Hobart is The International Wall of Friendship that was conceived as a lasting memorial to the bonds of friendship and goodwill of many nations who have made Tasmania their home and their contribution and commitment to the progress and wellbeing of the State. It is located in the sunken garden at the Commonwealth.

Attracting sites includes the Kangaroo Bluff Historic Site at Bellerive that is a gun emplacement and fort built in 1880. Another is the Floating in Constitution Dock in Hobart that is Australia’s oldest sail trading vessel SV May Queen. Built before the development of roads and land transport routes this type of vessel helped to establish and supply coastal communities and industry in the south east of Tasmania. Another is the Mount Nelson and Truganini Reserve that is a conservation area south of Hobart. Mount Nelson is 10 minutes’ drive from Hobart (five kilometers) en route to Kingston.

Hobart also is filled with many prominent vineyards one of which is the Morningside Vineyard that is located at Tea Tree in southeast Tasmania’s Coal River Valley wine region. Tea Tree is a 30-minute drive from Hobart (35 kilometers), a few kilometers from the historic village of Richmond. Morningside’s three hectares (seven acres) of vines were planted in 1980.

One of the known events in Hobart is the Myer Hobart Christmas Pageant that is Tasmania's largest Christmas parade and a hugely popular tradition, delighting both adults and children with colorful community entries, dance and music processions and the arrival of Santa. The pageant offers a great opportunity to showcase your club, school group, community group, charity, organization or business to the thousands of spectators who line the streets of Hobart on pageant day.
